Default clutch need replacement?

i have a 2001 jetta gl and the clutch doesn't engage until about 2 inches before it is all the way out. i don't believe it is slipping or anything but is there a way to adjust it or do i need to replace it or is it good until i start to feel it slip. is there a way to check it out without ripping everything apart?
