Default clutch (cable??) issues. need help diagnosing - any help would be appreciated!

Hi all, I've got 97 jetta diesel 5 speed. Today's issue is this. I was about to start it, pushed in the clutch, and it just went straight to the floor & stayed there. You can reach down & move the clutch pedal back up again manually, but it doesn't come back up on it's own. I know very very little about this sort of thing, and haven't had too much time to look at it or work on it at this point, but the only other thing I can say at this point is that when you push in or pull up the pedal, you can see the cable & arm move, so I don't assume the cable itself is broken. More details to come, but any info, suggestions, resources, etc etc would be appreciated. Questions/comments would be good too! Thanks!

problem ended up being the clutch release arm/finger broken. not a bad fix, pulled the cap of the end of the transmission (easy to access from wheel well), swapped in a new one, replaced the cap, all is good.
