It sounds like a decent deal. I have heard good things about the GLI motor, and i only drive manual trannies, wich eliminates alot of tranny problems. Have you test drove it? Most importantly what does your gut tell you. I just bought a 95 GL on my gut alone. Never owned a VW befor, and man i am very happy about my decision.

if the car dives good then it sounds like a good deal, the gli's are really nice looking jettas also if it is the 1.8t and your looking to tune it up check the engine code (found on the timing belt cover) AEB, AGU, AWD, AWW, APH, ATW are the 150 horsepower engines except on 03 and up modles they were changed to 163 hp. and the AWP engine code is the 180 hp model thats the one you want if your gonna tune it up

Gotta have more info? Are the miles freeway miles, joyriding miles, was the car used for work or just a normal everyday car? Doesn't sound too bad I guess, 85k seems high these days but was it reg maintained?? Like they said up there, if you don't plan on modding, then just a plain motor is what you want, otherwise a turbo or VR6 is what ya want.
