Default align to TDC & leakdown test

Hi,

Attempting to do a leakdown test last night got stalled by inability to turn the crank over
to align each cyl at TDC.

Stupidly I put my wrench on the cam, wouldn't move, then tried the next cog down.
I think I popped that gear one tooth over throwing the timing off.
Now it idles high and breaks up when I rev a little (did VERY little running after I realized
I threw off the timing).

Then I find the crankshaft bolt is a multi-point star that none of my sockets will grab.

1) Is there a special wrench to turn over the crankshaft?
If I parked the car in Park, would it prevent the crank from turning? If
I moved the trans to Neutral without starting the car, will it disengage? (automatic)

2) I need to realign the timing. I see a 0 mark on the top cam gear, but can't see any
marks on the one I moved. Anyone have advice on realigning the timing?

How easily should the crankshaft turn?

I have Haynes manual but no other experience or books on this engine.
My only mechanical experience has been my 6.2L diesel...

1992 VW Jetta SOHC 1.8L

Thanks

Default RE: align to TDC & leakdown test

Get a spanner wrench and a repair manual and you'll be set.
