Default 99 Jetta shifting issue. Please help!

I have a 99 Jetta and all of a sudden it has beeen doing this thing where it won't shift out of park. The shifter will move when the car is off but not when its on. I put my foot on the break and it gets stuck as if i were trying to shift out of park without putting the break on. Please help, i can't go anywhere right now, haha.

start the car in neutral and switch into drive from there. if you can switch gears when the car is off you should be able to start it in neutral.
hope this helps for a temp fix.

I'm not sure if 99 is covered, but I had my fiance's '01 in the shop and there is a brake switch "recall" of sorts. The switch is part of the circuit that allows the shifter to be moved from park. They are usually just above the brake pedal, under the instrument cluster.

i would recommend trying the brake switch recall. im not sure if that would affect an auto or not, i dont have much knowledge on them, but its worth a try since its free and all...

Is there an EPC light on? Ive had to replace the brake switch twice in the last 3 months cause the shifter wouldnt move fromPark (orNeutral, yes I tried that too) If you reach above the brake pedal with your foot on the brake, you can feel where its stuck. You can pull it out and shift then but you should get a new brake switch causeit will just keep getting stuck. There $15 at AutoZone.
