My 1998 Jetta III GLS needs 80K maintenance. Is this something I can take care of on my own? What items are involved in something like that.

It probably means everything. Tune up, suspension, and emissions. I would find a good shop which specializes in imports and have them do it. Avoid the dealer if possible, they will make you pay dearly for daring to maintain the car.
