Default 2008 Wolfsburg clutch or slave cylinder

My daughter's 2008 Jetta Wolfsburg 6 speed with 128k miles is with her and is 500 miles away. She woke up and jumped in her car and her clutch was on the floor. No signs of any clutch issues leading up to this. There was a small amount of fluid under her car. She had it towed to a firestone dealer and they checked it out. They claim that it needs a new clutch and flywheel and quoted me $3,200! I guess they thought they saw the wrong guy coming. I think it is a slave cylinder issue only and got into a heated discussion with them so I had it towed to a transmission house. I'll get their feedback today but I would like an opinion from this forum. If the clutch and slave cylinder both need to be replaced, my goal is to get the car drivable and get it back home and replace the clutch myself. So questions: do you think it is the slave cylinder only? If there is a clutch issue which I doubt; can I limp it home if I replace only the slave cylinder?

Fluid on the floor sounds like the clutch slave cylinder is leaking. Replace that and bleed it to see if you have a pedal. If not you need a new master cylinder.
