Default 2003 Jetta - reset Drive Cycle to Ready?

I have a 2003 Jetta w/a Drive Cycle Monitor that needs to be reset to Ready. I drove my normal 70+ miles, but it didn't reset. When the garage I use did some research, they are finding these CRAZY Drive Cycle reset instructions. There are 17 steps in the process, which are dangerous and illegal. Any suggestions on how to proceed? I hate the idea of involving the local VW dealer, who I've had nothing but problems with since I purchased the car brand new. (The car was serviced over 20 times within the first year for manufacturer defects, and while the car was fixed each time, the customer service was horrible.)
