1997 Jetta Rattle at 2000 rpm
Hey all,
I just bought a 1997 Jetta GL 5 speed with 125,000 miles. The car has been well maintained. It's a great car, but I have found that when I shift and the engine is running between 1900-2100 rpm, I get a rumble. The sound comes from underneath the car behind the center armrest (where the middle backseat passenger's feet would rest). I can also hear the sound in 5th gear when the Jetta reaches about 60mph. It isnt coming from up front, which I'm assuming is a good thing. Any ideas where the problem is, how hard is it to fix, and how much do you think it would cost to get it done?
Thanks forany suggestions in advance!

Sounds like the Heat sheild resonating at that RPM. I'm pretty sure theres a heat shield covering the Catalyst ... and its located right where you mentioned. As for how much it costs I'm not too sure... could be as easy as a quick weld??? thats all i know, sorry. Good luck!
