Default Vw gti mkv 2008

I am having an issue with my rev counter at idle starting below 1000rpm then surging randomly above 2000rpm, as soon as it hits this level then drops off back to below 1000rpm. I have a video if anyone wants to see/hear whats happening.
I think it has something to do with failing coils? We recently had 2 or 3 coils replaced with a local mechanic and then read a forum VW are replaceing them FOC due to a recall??
Any help would be great thanks!
JJ

You really need your motor scanning for any error codes logged in the ecu as that will save alot of guessing.
