VW Golf GTI problem

VW Golf GTI problem
I am frequently receiving engine failure alarm (yellow engine symbol)
The problem is isolated to the pot meter informing about the position of what the workshop call , short and long exhaust pipe.
It has happen 3 times during the last 5 month. The fault is deleted by my VW workshop every time.
As replacement of exh.. manifold is very costly and might not be the problem, but rather a software/computer problem , I am asking other members
if they have experienced the same problem.
When the fault is active it does not seem to have any influence of the cars performance.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.
