Default TDI glow plug light

I have a 98' beetle TDI with 103k miles on it. I love the fuel mileage it gets, but the dealers suck bigtime. I won't go through everything they have done, or tried to do. The problem I'm having now is that the glow plug dash indicator started blinking on and off the other day. It did it for approx. 5 minutes, and then stopped. 5 minutes later, it started again. It's done this approx 4-5 times since then. Does anyone have any ideas on what's causing this witout going to the dealer, which I refuse to do anymore. The last time I went to them was to get the code to re-set the radio, after I changed the battery. They informed me that it now would cost 25.00. It specifically stated in the owners manual that any authorized dealer would do it free of charge. After calling Volkswagen of America, the dealer called me back, and gave me the code over the phone for free! Imagine that. Oh well, if anyone has an idea on my glow plug light, I'd appreciate the help. Thank you.

Default RE: TDI glow plug light

doesnt appear as though many check this forum that frequently, wish i could help man but i havent the slightest clue about diesels. I think some shops and autoparts places will run a diagnostic on CELs for free. im not certain thats everywhere but my friends and i ahev had that done a few times so i guess it would be worth calling and asking.
good luck
