Default Removing brake pads

I have a2001 GTI with 205,000 miles. I am going to get a new car this fall. Lately there is a noise like a brake pad is rubbing coming from the right rear. I suspect a sticky caliper. I don't want to put any more money into this car. What would happen if I just took the brake pads of the right rear wheel?

You haven't posted for a while.

You need to inspect the rear brake pads as the brake material might be worn down to the steel backing. Free the calipers off and fit new brake pads.
