oil for 2006 TDI?
Hello all,
I have an 06 Jetta TDI and from what I have read on a few forums, one of the oils that would be good to use is Rotella T full synthetic, which is available to me from Wal Mart. Although expensive, if it is good for 8-10k between oil changes then it works out in the end.
I stocked up on this (enough for three oil changes) but wanted to make sure this is ok to use? I heard it was one of the better ones, but it is not too late, as my car has around 3k on it so it has not been in for the first oil change yet.
Just wanted to be sure this is a good oil to use, any other folks out there using this or have any recommendations? I don’t know what the dealer uses but I figured that they would try and sway me to whatever they use, and I was not planning on getting service done at the dealer anyhow.
The local shop here is owned by a diesel mechanic (albeit he works on the big trucks for GM) and he says the Rotella is one of, if not, the best oil.
Thanks
Mike George

Just make sure it conforms to VW standards (what is it? 501.1 or something like that?) It will be in your manual. It should be a 5W-40 oil. I just got a case of AMSOIL ... going to go with that when it is time for the next oil change.

The VW spec you want as I recall is 505.01 for a 2005 or later VW TDI. Has anyone out there heard different? Please let me know if I am misinformed. As for Amsoil, they make a great product, but when I went to the website and typed in a 2005 VW TDI, it said they didn't make one that met the spec yet. I am just throwing that out there for what it's worth. Check out the below website. I found it recently when doing some searching online for oils meeting the late model TDI spec.

Good luck.

Thanks! Oh, and Amsoil does have filters for the 2006 Jetta TDI now. I bought one and just had my oil changed at the Mobil 1 in Anthem recently. They were actually glad that I had my own oil and charged me labor only.
Car seems happy so far.

I wouldn't doubt that any quality oil will be fine and Amsoil is good stuff. It woud not surprise me if this oil spec issue is just a gimic, but one can't be too careful when under warranty. I don't trust a dealer when it comes to looking for a reason NOT to cover a repair.
Regardless, happy trails! I am new to the forum and there looks to be some good info out there.

Ok, my personal pref is Mobil 1 full synthetic
As far as what type to use, your new Jetta runs fairly high compression, you need full synthetic that matches VW standards, normal oil will not match lubrication and filtering properties provided by additives in full synthetic, this can lead to failure of major components over a long time spend the extra money to get the best. Also, your priorities are messed up there, your jetta has 3k on it DO NOT SKIMP ON OIL quality because of the price. You have invested a huge amount of money into this new car, do not cut any corners at all for at least the first 10k of its lifetime, dont even let there be a question as to whether you can use a certain type of oil keep it well under redline, and change your filter every time.
