Default 2003 TDI shakes on highway

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2003 Jetta TDI with about 111,000 miles. I bought it last August with 95,000 miles. Since I bought it I have been driving about 110 miles a day, 90% highway. Over the past few months it has started shaking when I accelerate on the highway, mostly between 65-70 mph. When it happens, the steering wheel shakes quite a bit. Would this be a transmission issue? If I let off the gas the car rides perfectly smooth; this only happens when I push the gas. Thanks for your help.

I would get the wheels rebalanced first, then I would check the drive shafts.

Wouldn't a balancing problem be consistent? This only happens when I hit the gas. If I let off the gas the shaking stops completely.

Out of balance generally starts to show at around 40-45mph then again at higher speeds. Checking the wheel balance is the first thing to do. If that's ok then you have a drive shaft or engine/transmission mounting problem.
