Default 2003 GTI Turbo Transmission Problem

Hey guys, I am new to this forum and was wondering if I could get some help from some other VW enthusiasts. My buddy has a 2003 Turbo GTI, 1.8 w/ 40,000 miles and his transmission went out. He is getting a quote in Washington DC for $5000.00 (thats where he lives). That seems a little excessive, do any of you have an other options he can go to save a little $$??? All your help is much appreciated.

p.s. I have a feeling the previous owner doged the trans real bad, is this normal for this model with 40,000 miles and year???

First, Welcome to the forum. You could rebuild the tranny for so much cheaper. Otherwise, I think performance-cafe.com has trannys for around 2000-3000. Not sure but there's different websites you could go. Any more questions, just ask.

Hey Fellas, this is my car so I thought I'd fill in some details. I took the car to the dealership praying that it might just be the clutch orsomething magically simple. But the fact is the transmission is done and they are quoting me a little over $5000 to repair it. Further they are stongly recommending that I NOT go with the rebuilt transmisson? I trust their diagnosis but have serious reservations about their solution to the problem.I'm planning on contacting a few of the Euro and VWrepair shops this weekend to get their recommendations. Keep you posted. Thanks Kinib for getting this going. Owning aGTI is like buying into a family.Without even asking, three of my friends imediately began making callsand researching this problem after hearing about the situation. You guys are great. Can't wait to be up and going again in my bandaged GTI again. I miss it.

Thanks man. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Was it a speed thing or lack of concentration?I've been loose in mine before and it's not much fun. Never spun though. Any idea what I should expect to have my tranmission rebuilt? I want to get up and going so bad.
