1983 GTI thermo switch (?) crumbled. Where to get replacement?

1983 GTI thermo switch (?) crumbled. Where to get replacement?
Hello,
My thermo switch (also called thermal sensor/switch) has fallen apart (pictured). It is/was located just off the driver's side of the motor.
Does anybody know where to get an exact replacement for this? It appears to have been discontinued by VW. The part number is not fully readable, but it appears to end in 919 369.
Also, this switch is followed by a u-turn hose. Inside this hose was a cylindrical metal piece, same diameter as the hose. The metal piece appeared to be solid, save for a hole drilled through the middle. Is this the guts of the thermo switch, or was this supposed to be there?
