I have recently acquired a 1988 Golf GT 5-speed. Just about everything in the car works properly except the shifter. The reverse gear lock-out tang is broken off the shifter. I have a new shifter and went to install it today. It's not as easy as everyone around here (Colorado Springs) told me. I have yet to figure out how to get the old shifter past the shift-rod collar in order to get it out of the car. Has anyone done this replacement? Thanks in advance for any and all help.
