Oil Light
I own a Mark 3 VW Golf Ryder which has currently been through some work (4 New Shocks, New Back Box, break bars) it's about the have the gear box removed to assess a gear box oil leak. But I noticed today that the oil light is on, but the car has plenty of oil in it. What it lacks however is gearbox oil, due to the leak. But that can't be why the lights on can it, as it just tests engine oil. The light seems to come on when I slow down and possibly when I change gear. My current plan is to put a touch more oil in the engine to see if it helps (but not over fill it).
Does anyone know why this might happen? Any help is greatly appreciated.

i own a 95 golf gl 5 speed and i have this problem after about 20 minutes of running the car (say its enough time to get the motor to operating temperature) and at lower rpms, the oil sensor light comes on and theres this loud beeping noise, i dont know if you have this same problem but yeah as soon as i give it gas, it will go away until the rpm drops again...its annoying.

Did you get any chance to fix the problem with oil light flashing and beeping. I have the sameissue with my 97 golf , after 20-30mins or so of driving, when rpm drops below 2k it starts beeping and oil light flashes. Only stops beeping when rpmis above 2k.Any other who has similar problem please email, thanks
Jrailer has a point on the pick up tube.
However it sounds like all of you are using too thin oil. None
said what viscosity oil your using. A 4 cyl engine needs at
least a 20w-50 . When you rev the engine it builds more
oil pressure so the thin stuff your using will shut of the light
and bells and whistles, but when the engine is at low rpm
and the light comes on, then you don't have enough oil
pressure. so go change it to a heaver viscosity and it should do a fix for you.

hey guys, see if your oil sending unit is whats causing the problem. If it is leaking around the oil sending unit, then thats the problem. I checked to see if the viscosity of the oil was right but the tech at the Volkswagen place said that shouldnt cause the problem and that its most likely the sending unit. Cheap and easy fix, screws right in and the old one right off
