Default New car white gunk

Hey I'm close to buying a Golf. It checks out perfectly apart from probably needing an oil change and one other thing that worries me. When you open the engine oil cap theres a very small amount of brownish residue. It really isn't much but I know this can mean head gasket probs. Its a 2001 1.6 16v SE with 45000 miles up with a full service history. Is it worth buying? Its still got a months warranty left so I could send it off for diagnostics but will a prob;em be detectred?
Thanks for any help, I really want this car but just making sure
