Default My OBDII connector is missing

Hi, I recently purchased a 2002 VW Golf (after the 1st one was totaled a few years ago).
Just today it skipped a few times, and the Check Engine light came on. Then it ran just fine again.
Having my own OBDII reader, I thought I'd just quickly read the codes, and know what is wrong.
Well, the OBDII connector is in the center console underneath the radio, right?
WRONG!
There is an obvious rectangle hidden hole where the OBDII connector is supposed to be, but the connector itself is not there. I took the lower half of the dash cover off, and it just isn't there. No connector, no cut wires, nothing.
Any idea where it could be?
Thanks!

It should be under the radio but it sounds like someone has moved it.

Hi Keith,
Thank you for your reply, the picture in your link is exactly where it should be - the square hole is in the dash cover, but the purple connector is missing.

You need to search for it as its needed to test for faults?

So there does the cable go? If I know where it goes, I can start at that end.

OK, I finally found the OBDII connector. Not where it is supposed to be though. It is located left of the steering column, behind the dash covers.
I read codes P0300, P0304, and P0420. All indicating that it is misfiring on cylinder 4.
The spark plug is clean, so what remains? A bad coil pack, or a bad injector? Is there anything else that would cause a misfire on one cylinder only?
Thanks!
Berrie

VAG Error Code: 16684/000768/4051
EOBD II Error Code: P0300

Fault Location:
Random/Multiple Cylinder(s) - Misfire Detected/Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
Lack/loss of power.
Hard start.
Engine hesitation.

Wiring/Connector(s).
Air Intake System leaking.
Fuel Supply faulty.
Injector(s) faulty.
Ignition Cable(s) and/or Spark Plug(s) faulty.
Ignition coil(s) faulty.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve (N18) stuck/open.
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor (G40) faulty.
Low compression.

Possible Solutions:
Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s).
Check Misfire Recognition.
Check Air Intake System.
Check Fuel Supply.
Check Injector(s) and Injector Sealing.
Check Ignition Cable(s) and Spark Plug(s).
Check Ignition Coil(s).
Check Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve (N18).
Check Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor (G40).
Check cylinder compressions.

Special Notes:
This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) indicates that one or multiple cylinders are misfiring, but the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) fails to identify the cylinder.

Tech Notes:
The P0300 code means that a cylinder(s) is misfiring or is randomly misfiring. Start by checking for intake leaks, intake gaskets are common caused of multi-cylinder misfiring. If no leak are found the next step is to replace the spark plugs. If the problem persist more tests needs to be done to diagnose problem.

When is the code detected?:
The control module monitors the crankshaft speed and has detected a misfire condition.

Description:
When a misfire occurs, engine speed will fluctuate. If the engine speed fluctuates enough to cause the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal to vary, the Engine Control Module (ECM) can determine that a misfire is occurring.

VAG Error Code: 16688/000772
EOBD II Error Code: P0304

Fault Location:
Cylinder 4 - Misfire Detected - Intermittent

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
Lack/loss of power.
Hard start.
Engine hesitation.

Wiring/Connector(s).
Ignition system.
Fuel injectors.
Fuel pressure.
Running out of fuel.
EVAP canister purge valve.
Evaporative emission system.
Low compression.
Base engine problems.
Engine Control Module (ECM) damaged.

Special Notes:
This feature search for engine misfire in a specific cylinder. Most of the time the cause for a misfire is a lack of combustion in a cylinder due to absence of spark, poor fuel metering, or poor compression.

Tech Notes:
The P0304 code means that the cylinder 4 is misfiring or is randomly misfiring. Start by checking for intake leaks an if no leaks are found the next step is to replace the spark plugs on cylinder 4. If the problem persist more tests needs to be done to diagnose problem.

When is the code detected?:
Engine Cylinder 4 is misfiring.

Description:
When a misfire occurs, engine speed will fluctuate. If the engine speed fluctuates enough to cause the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal to vary, the Engine Control Module (ECM) can determine that a misfire is occurring.

VAG Error Code: 16804/001056
EOBD II Error Code: P0420

Fault Location:
Catalytic Converter System, Bank 1 - Efficiency Below Threshold/Lower Limit Exceeded/Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.

Leakage in Intake and/or Exhaust System.
Catalyst faulty.
Oxygen Sensor(s) faulty.
Oxygen Sensor(s) Control faulty.
Exhaust tube.
Intake air leaks.
Fuel injectors may be faulty.
Fuel injector leaks.
Spark plugs may be faulty.
Improper ignition timing.

Possible Solutions:
Check Intake and Exhaust System for Leaks.
Check Catalyst.
Check Oxygen Sensor(s).
Check Oxygen Sensor(s) Control.
Perform Oxygen Sensor(s) Aging Check.

Special Notes:
For 1.8T's experiencing this fault code, this thread may be useful: Aftermarket DP/Cat -DTC - Cat efficiency below threshold - Who has this DTC and with DP/Cat
Check the Official Factory Repair Information for any Technical Product Information (TPI)/Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that apply to dealer level Engine Controller flash updates for the vehicle in question.

Tech Notes:
As the code description implies the P0420 code means that the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the Oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. If the P0420 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.

When is the code detected?:
Three way catalytic converter Bank 1 does not operate properly.
Three way catalyst converter Bank 1 does not have enough oxygen storage capacity.

Description:
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the switching frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 (front O2 sensor) and heated oxygen sensors 2 (rear O2 sensor).
A three way catalyst converter (Manifold) with high oxygen storage capacity will indicate a low switching frequency of Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor 2 (G130). As oxygen storage capacity decreases, the Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor 2 (G130) switching frequency will increase.
When the frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 and 2 approaches a specified limit value, the three way catalyst malfunction is diagnosed.
