Default Mk2 Golf - use a different distributor

I have a MK2 Golf 1300 engine with transistorised iginition. Could I replace my distributor with a VW Polo 1996 1.4 distibutor?

My engine can be hesitant/jumpy on light acceleration, I have traced the fault to the vacuum advance unit. If I suck on the unit it constantly lets air through, the diaphram must surely be eroded. I removed and blocked the vacuum advance unit pipe and the engine was better, but this is not a permanent solution.

I have a new VW Polo 1996 1.4 distibutor, could I use this? All features are the same, i.e. the hall sender plug, camshaft connection, dimensions, vacuum advance unit and rotor. The only difference is the cap & connectors.

The part number of the original distributor is 030 905 205M, the new polo distributor is not OEM and does not have a part number but I believe it to be 030 905 205 AB.

You could just use an another transmission.
I hope it will be a blast!
