Post Light grinding sound on 2001 Golf Gl 2.0L

I have been hearing a light grinding noise while driving. I think that it is either the drive shaft or a problem with my transmission. I have 136,000 miles on my golf so i'm not really sure what it is yet. I found that the boot in the center of the drive shaft has a slight tear in it. The pitch of this grinding sound seems to change with the rpm's.

You need a new cv joint. Most of your grease is gone from the joint through the crack. It is much easier and not much more expensive to replace the whole axle.

yeah thats what i thought, so you think i should just buy a new complete drive shaft instead of just replacing the joint and the boot?
