Default golf auto tranny sluggish when cold - help

I just bought a 1997 VW golf trek model w/ automatic tranny has 160 k miles well taken care of but when engine is cold (ie. first start up in the morning) the tranny is sluggish to engage/hesitates. After it is at operating temperature everything is ok, just first thing in the morning. Looking at records last tranny fluid change (ie. replace gasket, plug etc.) was 30, 000 miles ago. Is it time for a tranny fluid change, will this fix the problem. thanks.
