Default Fuel pump intermittently not engaging

Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum so i'm hoping someone will still have the graciousness to help me I own a 2000 VW golf 2.0 GLS with 196k and am having issues with my fuel pump. At times, it simply won't engage when I turn the key. I have done some research, and yes have changed the fuel pump relay. Unfortunately i'm still having the same issues. I'm reluctant to jump to a conclusion and say the fuel pump isn't working because it does engage most of the time, but recently this issue has been occuring more frequently. I'm speculating that it has something to do with the wiring or connection points at either end.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? I'm trying to be a handy man by doing the work myself and would like to exhaust all other options before concluding to wiring problems.

Thank you for your help.
