Default Disconcerting noise at certain Revs

Hi all,

recently, after very little driving over the last two weeks, my Golf 1.4 MK3 has started to make a noise at high revs (1500+ ) in first, second and third gear, i don't get the problem in fourth gear its definitely accelerator related as i can control its pitch but lowering my revs or changing up before it starts. the performance doesn't seem to be affected- i don't lose speed and can make it up hills well enough (there are a few very steep ones around here) but it doesn't sound good, its a revolving noise, sounding on every cycle of the wheel

my problem is im absolutely skint and i need to assess what i should do next as i cant even afford a diagnosis at the garage.

so i was wondering if there were any checks i could do to try ascertain exactly whats happening?

cheers
