Default consumption..

I got a -98 golf 1.8 variant. I'm looking for ways to make it less consuming.
I've been thinking of changing the spark plugs, the air filter and taking the injection system for an adjustment. Would this be any good or just a waste of money? Any other ideas?
And how much does your golf consume? I've had something like 8-9litres/100km (~30mpg). Ain't it quite a lot or am I just being mingy?
Thanks.

um yes and no. Fuel filters, air filter, spark plugs, all can help but it comes down to what the manufatures MPG specification is.
