Default charcoal canister repair advice

i have a 1998 golf 2.0L automatic and it needs a new throttle body (eng light on: throttle position cant be rest) and a charcoal canister ( small leak)
does anyone know of a good online repair manual or can someone give me tips or steps on how to replace these parts
i'm an apprentice and my shop will help me but i wanted to do it on my own time and I have some experience with throttle bodies but none with charcoal cannisters so thats my main concern
another thing is the car barely gets 400km to the tank is it likely that fixing these two problems listed above will help gas mileage? what else could it be? and the transmission is slipping, i know i need a new one but until then is there any way i could minimise it temporarily? (i put it in drive and press on the accelerator and it takes it a second to engage and then the car jolts forward)
thanks alot
-Alex
p.s. i live in canada so if you know of any canadian stores (possibly in the ottawa area) that sell good manuals let me know because i dont want to buy something that will cause more problems than help
