Default Autocar (Almost) Names Golf R Best Car on Sale

Almost:

The British car magazine Autocar recently released a list of its five favorite cars on sale today and the Golf R came in second spot. Although finishing ahead of a 911 GT3 RS is a big honor, the magazine goes on to say “Were we to allow ourselves the luxury of a draw, you could call the Golf R the joint winner.”

Right up until their final test the Golf was neck-and-neck with the winner, some McLaren. The magazine concedes that since the Golf costs less than a quarter of what the winner costs and earned all of its points despite the handicap of existing in the real world, the moral victory should go to it. Unfortunately this was the world of the British motoring press and not the real world, so the victory went to the supercar.

Nonetheless, the Autocar staff praised the hatch for its engine, its speed, and its handling. They go so far as to say that it rises above its class, warning readers not to mistake the Golf R for any other hot hatchback.

“It’s what this car does with its performance that makes it so compelling,” writes Autocar. “It doesn’t address decent roads so much as devour them like a fat man at a pie-eating competition.”

The most remarkable thing, Autocar concludes after a few breathless paragraphs praising the Golf R, is that it is still a quiet, comfortable, all-season, all-reason car.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
