I have a 97 golf, while driving it is making a clunking noise coming from the front drive terrain system. I assumed it was a CV even though neither of the boots on either axle were torn, but i am now thinking that since i discovered this broken ring after i noticed a noise while going over bumbs, popped of the lug cap, and discovered this ring, i figure it is possible that there is now foreplay in the driveline causing the shimmy/clunking.
My question is, what is this part, and how do i look it up to find the replacement, I have the Bentley manual ordered and i am sure it will have the part listed in an explosion view of that area of the vehicle, but i want to make sure that for some reason it is not, that I ask you all what your take on it is, I will be posting a picture soon

Well the second picture looks better as it shows the size of the ring compared with the centre cap, its the retaining ring for the centre cap.

the feeling i get is that it came from the driveline, but i will check the other lug caps and see if there is the same ring in the rest of them.

There do use a similar type of circlip to hold the CV joints on the driveshaft. I couldn't see the relative size in the first picture but the second picture showed it better. These circlips don't go missing unless you dismantle the CV joints of the driveshaft, they won't fall of on there own.
