Default 96 golf 1.8 funny sound

Hey I have a 96 golf. The 1.8 liter engine. When I start it up it makes a funny noise that's coming from the A/C and also close to the timing belt. I took a look but nothing is rubbing and my A/C wasn't working since I bought it. It almost sounds like a knife scratching against a sharpening stone. It's normally when it's cold out and it stops making the noise once my car warms up. Any ideas?

I'd say it's your A/C compressor.

Is that something I should worry about? If so, how much would it cost about for parts?

Thanks for the reply.

I have never bought a compressor before. And you would need to have it filled with freon by a mechanic (unless you have a freon license) so, if I had to guess I'd say around $500. If you don't mind not having a/c then I wouldn't worry about it. If you want the noise gone you could remove the compressor and get a drive belt for without a/c.
