Default 1999 Golf GL 2.0: A few problems

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm the proud owner of a 1999 VDub Golf, and so far I've been happy with the car is driving but I've been having a few problems and I was wondering if someone might be able to give me some insight on some issues, some more minor than others, starting with the minors:
-The Ashtray in the back that is in a cylindrical form is broken, it has been since I got the car. I think it has all the springs and everything, I just can't figure out how to put it all back together. Is there a guide that would show how it is assembled, and if not, where could I get the parts to replace it if it's something relatively easy to replace?
-I had this problem where the A/C **** to control the temperature was getting stuck while going to hot (Maybe 9/10ths of the way from the hot it would start creating resistance, like a spring). The problem stopped about 2 weeks ago, but now, I can't change the vents the A/C is coming through. Anyone have some insight on the problem.
-The person who had my car before got in a wreck, and the paintjob on the car is not visibly horrible, but when cleaning the car, and after maintenance, you can tell it's a bad paint job. Apparently, the people who painted the car semi-painted over the class pieces that are in place where the license plate resulting in red lights. Where could I get this part from?
-Major Issue: Ever since I got the brake pads replaced last, when breaking hard or stopping in reverse, I've had this big CLUNCK sound, almost like I'm hitting something. Since the back of my car isn't deformed, I'm assuming I'm not hitting something but rather that something is moving around down there. What could it be?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

1stvwparts.com will have a diagram of the ashtray. The a/c sounds like one of the rods is stuck that that **** controls. It's not your pads it would be my guess that one of your bolts on the caliper is loose.
