Default 1999 Golf 2.0L doesn't start, mechanic puzzled

1999 Golf 2.0L

Two months ago, starting problems.
Replaced camshaft sensor - fixed.

Since then,
- rattling sound from worn out catalytic converter,
- rough engine sound,
- intermittent lack of response when stepping on gas.

Failed to start one week ago, jump no good.
Turning key caused engine to shudder violently but regularly in compartment.
Had towed.

Mechanic (40 years experience) did the following,
- tried to test for adequate compression in cylinders.
- tested #4 - OK.
- then car stopped cranking.
- removed spark plugs,
- connected to new battery,
- tried to crank to 10 complete revolutions to build up and test for compression, wouldn't crank at all.
- thinks maybe starter but not sure.

He is completely puzzled.

as left lane dave said could be ur timing belt gone, get you mechanic to have a look at the timing belt to see if any teeth have warn away, tawn a tooth etc. from the sound of it not cranking you could be up for some money if that is the worse case sonario, will need new head valves you know the rap sheet.
