Default Blown auto transaxle

My daughters 2002 Cab has been diagnosed with a bad auto transmission. Check engine light came on 2 days before its NYS inspection..It only shifts into 1st and 2nd. Estimates for parts and labor run from 3000+ for repair and 6K for a new trans. My mechanic is does not think its worth it..

Is there a reputable VW shop in lower Westchester County NY area who might be able to get a rebuilt or used one.
If not I am afraid we are going to have to donate
Thanks very much for the insights.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.

Thanks Keith.
Yes the mechanic ran the codes. While I am not certain what they were, he and the transmission shop he uses confirmed the diagnosis of a bad transaxle. Lower estimate was replacement of valve body and solenoids.Highest was for new trans and install Also the error codes could not be cleared so I can't pass NY State inspection. Hopefully a warrantied (1 yr min) used trans can be found. If not I will have to donate the car.
Thanks for the suggestion though. Much appreciated.
