Default 1999 Cabrio gas tank filling up 7/14 gallons

Hey I'm new to the Forum and new to VW

Just purchased this 99' cabrio a week ago today, car runs great, strong vehicle. Love the Convertible for my commute through the back country to work. The Vehicle needs a lot of cosmetic work, and some mechanical. My main issue right now is the Gas tank not filling up all the way, it kicks out the hose handle after about 6-7 gallons of gas. Any ideas on what may be the issue?
would and fuel injector help clean up the gas tank and fuel lines? i'm not sure how long the vehicle was sitting for, it was pretty dirty but runs like a beast.
If i can get help with this, i have plenty of other mechanical questions i could use help with also.

It could be a number of things, faulty fuel tank sender, faulty fuel gauge.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.

hmmm, can only fill the tank up to maybe 7 gallons from empty and it shows 3/4 full and stops letting me fill up. i noticed there's no flapper, could that be the problem? there's no check engine light or anything so would a code reader show up codes regardless?
