Default vw bug ?

I have a 72 Beetle and need to know how to fix a gas smell. Can you do away with the evaporative canister someway. I have no leaks and you can smell gas it the car. The book I have says it could be the canister and I can't find one. If you can help please do so.
Thanks Don

check and replace old fuel line for the vent system under the hood. there is usually a tiny nipple on the fill tube and the hose rotts. i would replace it. i think it is there to vent the fuel tank. i was getting a heavy gas smeel for some time when i filled up till i found that little sucker leaking. it would dribble just enough gas to fumigate the interior. hope i couild help

Thanks. I have replaced the fuel filler lines to the tank. I will try the vent line next.
