Default transmittion or drivetrain prolem on 02

hey guys im new to this fourm. my dad got a 2002 beetle last year because of how bad gas was getting. it was the first VW we have owned. we have had it for a little more than a year and we are incountering are first problem with it so far. when you drive over 45mph it sounds like the car does not want to shift, makes a humming/ howling noise. but when you put the car in nutral the RPM's on the car drop to normal. my dad thinks its the drivetrain but i dont think thats what it is.

sry for the long post but your input would be verry helpful.
