Currently, my dad and I are attempting to restore his old 1960 Volkswagen beetle, sedan. So far we have replaced the exhaust and all its gaskets, took apart and cleaned the carburetor, added an open fuel line, replaced spark plugs, cleaned the points, replaced capacitor, tested for compression(not as high as I would hope but still should be enough power to start), replaced the battery, and replaced the intake manifold(it was plugged). But when we attempt to start the car it cranks but no firing, we even see a spark. One time while I was cranking the engine my father was spraying quick start directly into the carburetor and we almost heard the engine fire. We are running out of reasons why it won't start and ask anyone that has the slightest idea to please tell us something we don't know.

How long is a piece of string?

Check for the basics as it got a good spark at the spark plugs is it getting petrol.

When we take out the spark plug and ground it to the engine we do see a spark, and it looks good and consistent to me, we even replaced spark plug wires hoping that was the problem.

If you have a good spark at the spark plugs and its getting fuel by the smell from the exhaust, check the ignition timing is correct statically.

 

But when we attempt to start the car it cranks but no firing, we even see a spark.
