Default Music Edition with no music & bad POD sensor

We have a 2004 Satellite Blue Music Edition Beetle. We bought it from a friend and knew the radio wasn't working. When she had it she said if the radio was connected, it would drain the battery. We've never connected it (had it for about 1.5 years) for fear or draining the battery, but Anyone have any ideas why it would do that? The previous owner took it to the dealership for everything and they claimed they couldn't fix it.

Also, the POD sensor is bad. The local VW dealer said it would be about $800 to replace it. When I looked it up it said it was a recall item. Anyone have any insight on that one either? Should the dealership be paying or do we have to?

Thanks so much!
