Unhappy Ignition trouble?

I have a 1972 Beetle sedan with generator that will not turn over. When I turn the key all I get is a quiet single click. I have run out of things I know to check. I just installed a new battery and starter/solenoid switch. I am getting spark at the ignition coil. I tested the solenoid by cross connecting the 2 terminals and I do get a whirr so it seems to have power. I get fuel to the carb. I have checked the fuses under the dash. New point, carb rebuilt, fuel pump and timing was done about 2 months ago.It had been driving fine all summer and then a month ago I took it on the highway. When I came to a stop it, stalled and would not start. It would crank but not turn-over. The engine was very hot after I let it sit it started right up but would die again after a few miles when I came to a stop. I got it towed home where it sat for a couple of weeks. When I went to get it started again now I get nothing when I turn the key but lights. No turn-over. So I replaced the battery and starter/solenoid yesterday. Made no difference. Could it be the ignition switch and is there a way for me to test it without replacing it first?I am not a mechanic so if you could respond as simply as possible it would help greatly.Thank you,

Heidi
