Default Ignition Lock Cylinder

My 2004 volkswagen new beetle 2.0L 5 speed is having key lock issues. When i try and start my beetle i can't get my key to turn. I was having this problem awhile back and eventually i could get it to turn and over a matter of 2 weeks it got a little worse. Today i went out to leave for town and i tried for almost 15 minutes and couldn't get the key to turn at all. It is like it is locked in place. My thoughts are that it is my tumbler (ignition lock cylinder), but i just want to get some experts opinions on it just to make sure. I don't want to spend $308 dollars on a lock cylinder if that isn't the issue. Any one please help!
