Anyone out there able to tell me how to remove the gear **** on a 2004 Beetle please in order to replace the gaiter?

I know the gaiter pops up from its sitting position at the base of the gear stick but i don't want to prise the disc on the top of the gear **** (which depicts the gear transmission sequence) off with force if it's not what i should do. A metal ring sits underneath the disc on top of the gear ****. Does that need to come off with the disc or just the disc? I guess there will be a screw underneath which releases the gear ****?

In the old days we would just unscrew the **** but that doesn't appear to be what happens here.
