Default Do I need head gaskets? 1200cc

Hi folks, hope you can help me with a head gasket question. I read the forums and there is a lot of info there but I just can’t seem to nail this down, do I need head gaskets or not?

I am rebuilding a 1200 cc engine for a 64 bug. The gasket kit came with head gaskets, sort of copper O ring looking things. After I bolted the heads on I discovered a problem with one of them and had to remove them and get new ones. Now I don’t have head gaskets and the local air cooled mechanic here is telling me that I shouldn’t use head gaskets on a 1200 anyway. There is a groove in the head for the gasket to crush into, why wouldn’t I use a gasket? Have you heard of this and can anyone direct me to any technical articles on this subject?

Thanks for the help folks.

I'm not a classic specialist but, I have never heard of not using head gaskets. It sounds ludacris.

It is factory to not have gaskets. If you are booting or using pop-ups for add compression then you would need a head gasket and beefed up head studs.

Also, the copper rings are shims for head spacing.
