Default Beetle Wiring

Hello, New here, and just bought my first Beetle. Non of the lighting worked at first. I have the running lights, and head lights working. The turn signals do not work, the indicator on the dash lites steady. I have replaced the flasher, no joy, cleaned all bulb sockets, and changed bulbs. The hazzard only flashes the left rear light, only after messing with the switch, Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Is this an air-cooled Beetle? What year is it? 1967 was the first 12 volt system, and 1968's wiring was horrible. What they did back then was use a 12 volt system with many 6 volt components and used reducers which can be a source of headaches.

I would recommend getting a voltmeter and testing all your wires. Find all the connections, splices, etc. and make sure that things are connected properly and not corroded.

In an old Beetle the two most important lights are the green and red lights (or two red lights). If these don't light up, DON'T drive the car!! Turn the key to the on position (don't start it), make sure they come on and then turn the key off to make sure the lights go off (if they don't you've got a short somewhere that'll give you false readings). If they come on and go off then start 'er up! If not, check the bulbs, connections, and any other components that can screw them up.

If you don't know what to look for or where to start get John Muir's Compleat Idiot's guide on amazon.com.

Went and talked to an old school VW mechanic, told him my problem, he said pull hazzard switch, zip tie it , and problem would go away. The man was right! All problems gone. He said switch wasnt built right, and always seperate. All blinker and hazzard functions are wired through that switch.
