Beetle virgins!
Hi Folks,
My wife has been wanting a VW beetle for at least that last 20 years - she claims to have fallen in love with the sound of em during her childhood in Germany! Since I achieved my lifelong ambition a few years ago and become the owner of a 15 year old Land Rover defender it has become harder and harder to resist her pleas for her own vehicle of choice! Hence the time draws near when we are to become beetle owners. The problem is that neither of us know too much about said vehicles and are unsure of which model or registration year to go for. We have owned a succession of water cooled VW's over the years (Golf, Polo, Passat) and always been pretty impressed with their performance and reliabilty, so we are not complete VW virgins. I think what we have liked most about the VW brand is their solid, no-nonsense, basic capabilties and this is what would love to find in a beetle. We live in a quiet corner of rural Sweden so the vehicle would not get used in heavy, fast moving traffic situations, nor for much urban driving. The speed limit around here is either 70 in built up areas or 90 kmh on the open roads - a leisurely pace that suits us down to the ground! Obviously, we get pretty severe winters over here so the car has to have a reliable heater and some well mannered suspension. I am not adverse to getting involved in the maintainance of the vehicle (hey, I'm a land rover owner) and in time I can get to grips with most mechanical needs both big and small, although to be honest I am not looking for a "project" vehicle, rather something that we can enjoy driving from the start. We would welcome any advice from you seasoned bug owners as to what model, engine size, reg. year, etc would be best for our needs and also what we should be paying for the vehicle.
Cheers for now, we look forward to any replies.
