Default Automatic Transmission fluid

My wife has just bought a 2003 2L soft top and the gear changes are a bit harsh from time to time so the ATF is in need of a change. Only there is nothing in the owners book about the ATF so wondered if anyone has ever changed it or know of any good resources on how to do it. A VW garage quoted it only needed a litre of fluid which I though was a bit low(?)

Anyhoo, any help would be much appreciated

Well you say you have a 2003 Beetle 2.0 so the spec that Autodata says is: Beetle (98-11) 2,0 1998-09 Engine code: AQY

Automatic transmission fluid:
01M gearbox = G 052 162
09G gearbox = G 052 025

Automatic transmission (drain & refill): 3.0 litres
01M gearbox
  • Fill transmission with specified amount.
  • Start engine. Select each gear for 10 seconds, then return selector lever to 'P'.
  • Connect diagnostic equipment to check ATF temperature.
  • Ensure ATF temperature is 35-45°C.
  • Remove sealing plug. Allow excess fluid to drain off.
  • If no fluid loss apparent: Top up until ATF drips from level tube.

Cheers, does this mean its not the DSG transmission?
So it doesn't have an oil filter type ATF filter and one thats in the fluid pan?

From what information I can find is that I drain the fluid by removing the sump plug and then the plastic overfill tube. Then remove the sump pan to get to the filter to replace that. Then put the pan back on with new filter and pretty much fill up with about the same amount of what came out.
Start the car and top up until it drips out and then put the sump plug back in.

VW are sure it's only a litre of fluid I need.
