Default AC Problem (Rattling sound/No cold air)

Car: 1999 Beetle 2.0 Liter

I'll try and keep it short and sweet.

Problem
The AC no longer blows cold air. When you turn the it on, there is a rattling sound coming from under the hood. When you turn the AC off, the sound goes away. It kind of sounds like there's a woodpecker under there hammering away. But it doesn't sound terrible. When the fan is turned on without the AC button depressed, there's no woodpecker sound -- so it's definitely AC related. The sound is coming from under the hood on the passenger side CLOSER to the firewall I believe.

Thoughts?[/align]

I have the same exact problem except that whenever my car is idle, it sounds as if the compressor starts "rumbling" or "shaking" in the gas pedal and making a humming noise but when I step on the gas and start going, the sound and vibration stops and the A/C gets cool again. I think my problem may be somewhat linked to yours.

I hope someone will come on here and help us out. Crossing my fingers...

If I take it in to get looked at, I'll post what the mechanic says.
