98 VW Beetle - Hatch won't latch
we recently were given a 98 VW Beetle - For some unknown reason now the hatch won't latch. Also the aftermarket radio won't power up. I've checked the fuses haven't found a problem. Need help!

99 beetle hatch won't latch
Robin,
I had the same problem with my 99 bug. The hatch would only latch on every 5th attempt or so. Turns out there was a worn out spring in the latching mechanism. The spring is suppose to keep a rod in contact with the soleniod claw. Instead of replacing the whole latching mechanism, I just added another spring. Cost $1.87 to fix. No more slamming of the hatch.
