Default 72 Super Beetle Gas tank question

I pulled the gas tank out to clean and coat, and noticed a plug in the bottom of the tank near the fuel line. When I removed the plug there appears to be a round cylindrical screen filter.
Does anyone know how this comes out and if it's replaceable? My local autoparts stores couldn't find anything about it.
I don't want to mess with it if I can't put it back or get a new one. But I do want to take it out to coat the tank.
Thanks in advance.
Steve
