Welcome to the forum.

Can you be more specific where this rattling noise is coming from?

I had this same problem with my '80 Vanagon. Check your valves and your starter (starter first.)

I'm gonna be starting a little bit of a restore project with my buggy. I'm gonna need some guidance as to where to go with parts etc

Git,
It would help if I knew where you were located. In my little corner of San Diego, I have a friend that has a VW graveyard. It's great, if you know how to refab/rebuild parts. New pieces, though... I usually just go through the seach engine and try to find the best parts for the lowest cost. I'm currently rebuilding two '71 Beetles, and most of it involves machining parts by hand (especially the body work.)
